TRICIA AND THE STREAM OF SUCCESS

“All right children,” Mrs. Wright the teacher said, “Let’s start our special project now. Yesterday I asked all of you to bring in a current events’ newspaper clipping to be discussed in class. Let me see by a show of hands those of you that are prepared.”
Almost all of the children raised their hands.
“Very good. Let me see,” Mrs. Wright smiled. “Tricia, you begin. What article did you bring in?”
“Mrs. Wright,” Tricia began, “There was this strange story on page five about these children who got sick from drinking water in their homes. It is right here in our own state, really not far from where we live. Isn’t that scary? Getting sick from drinking water in your own home.”
“Very good Tricia,” said Mrs. Wright. “We can classify your article under environment and water pollution. Water pollution is definitely a serious current events issue. One that we all over the country had soon better address. Yes, Andrew, why are you waving your hand so frantically?”
“Gee Mrs. Wright,” Andy gushed out, “I brought in the same article. I too think that it is scary and something should be done about it.”
“Hmm, that’s very interesting,” Mrs. Wright said, as she looked around the room and saw both Jill and Timothy waving their hands excitedly. “Yes?” she said, “What is it that you two have to say?”
“I cut out the same article,” beamed Jill.
“Me too,” shouted out Timothy, who could control his excitement no longer. “It’s something that I have been studying for a long time.”
“You have?” Mrs. Wright asked.
“Yes,” Timothy answered. “Several years ago, my father almost died from drinking some yucky water in a friend’s house that he had visited. He spent a long time in the hospital. When he got out, we both started a scrapbook and placed in it all the stories about water pollution that we found in newspapers and magazines. I have it here. Could I read some of them to the class?”
“Of course, Timothy,” Mrs. Wright said. “I think the class will find it interesting.”
“But first, Mrs. Wright, may I ask a question? Why is it that all the ecological articles about pollution and such are on the back or middle pages, while wars, crimes, and murders fill up the front pages? Why aren’t people more interested in water pollution then who robbed the bank?”
“Oh, Timothy that is a difficult question to answer,” Mrs. Wright said. “I think that most people still don’t believe how serious the water pollution problem is.”
Timothy said, as he walked to the front of the room with his overfilled scrapbook. “I have picked out just a few that I thought would interest everyone. Let me see, here this one will do…”
When Timothy finished and closed his scrapbook, there was silence in the classroom.
Tricia waived her hand wildly.
“Yes, Tricia?” Mrs. Wright asked.
“What are they going to do about all this pollution?”
“They are trying their best, Tricia,” Mrs. Wright answered.
“But it is something that not only the government and industry must work on, but all of us. It must start with you children. So often older people get so set in their ways that it is hard to show them anything new. The only hope Mother Earth really has left is in you children. That’s enough for today. We’ll continue where we left off tomorrow.”
“Mrs. Wright. Mrs. Wright, look, look,” Johnny shouted as he ran to the window.
